Jefferson Elementary

We have a growing outreach at Jefferson Elementary. In January of 2019, we launched a program that placed academic volunteers for an hour or more in most of Jefferson’s K-5 classrooms. We’ve painted classrooms, constructed benches for their playgrounds & outdoor areas. In May 2019, we brought a Rise Against Hunger event to Jefferson, where their 4th and 5th graders helped us bag 13,000 meals to feed the world’s hungry.

Guilford Elementary School

Since 2011, GCUMC has sponsored a Backpack Feeding Club at Guilford Elementary School. Through congregational support, our backpack program provides food over the weekend for under-resourced families. Children from these families also receive support at Christmas, and are invited to participate in various church activities, such as Bible studies and Vacation Bible School. Church members have opportunities to support this ministry through donation of food items, packing the back packs weekly, delivering them to the school, through financial support, or by providing transportation to church events.

Clothing Vouchers

Rather than maintain our own clothing closet, we have opted to partner with Goodwill Industries. We accept donations of gently used items throughout the year in our Goodwill room, and at least twice a year host a Goodwill truck on our church campus. We get vouchers for each bin we fill that allows families to shop at Goodwill stores for clothing & other items they may need. These vouchers are shared with school social workers for distribution to the families who can best benefit.
