GCUMC youth is a community of believers who are committed to living out an authentic walk with Jesus. One of the ways that Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God was through his relationships with people and the way he interacted with them. Therefore, we believe that through our relationships with each other and the sharing of our stories in community, we can be an authentic fellowship of Christ followers and embody the gospel in our world.

During the school year, our Sunday evening fellowship is an important time for everyone to hang out together, have some fun, and learn more about what Christ has in store for their lives. In consideration of safe distancing through the COVID Pandemic, youth arrive at 4:00 p.m. on the back field for some games, and break out into groups to discuss topics that affect our students and their world. We finish up the evening around 5:30. Everyone is welcome and we encourage students to bring a friend!

Small Groups

Because most of us are more comfortable sharing in smaller group settings, we meet every Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for small groups. Each small group is divided by gender and age so that you are able to feel comfortable and make friends with people going through similar situations that you are experiencing. Our small group ministry is a great way to be authentic in our faith journeys, while allowing students the chance to “go deeper” in their faith.

Local Missions / Outreach

The vision of the congregation here at GCUMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our youth ministry follows that vision through service opportunities and mission trips/events. We participate in several mission opportunities in the community and around the church during the year.

Regional Mission Trips

We go on two regional mission trips each year. During Spring break, we go to ReCreation which is a construction ministry based in Asheville, NC. This trip is primarily for our Junior High students but we also take Senior High students to serve as leaders as well. Every summer, we serve with Appalachian Service Project (ASP) for a week to work on lower income homes in the rural regions of Appalachia. Everyone who goes on these trips consistently says that they are life-changing, transformative events. Through these trips, we are able to serve others by providing for their immediate needs and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build relationships with the family members who live in these homes.

Connecting / Caring

  • Fall Retreat

Our fall retreat is the best community building activity that we have. Each fall, we take a weekend and head off to a camp for fellowship, fun, games, worship and devotionals. This is a great opportunity for students to bring friends and learn experience what God has in store for their lives.

  • Journeys for Christ

JFC is our outdoor adventure ministry. For a couple of weekends out of the year, we will go on an overnight camping trip to experience and discuss the beauty of Creation. Mostly, these events are for the boys, but the fall trip is for both girls and boys.

  • Summer Trips

SpiritUS is a conference that is held every August at Oak Island by the Western Conference of the UMC. This is a great trip and is consistently a favorite among all of the youth. In addition to SpiritUS, we go on various others trips throughout the summer months, including local outings to baseball games and theme parks, to a larger trip of some sort.

The Pumpkin Patch

This is our other major fundraising event of the year. Each fall, we sell pumpkins on the front lawn of the church to raise money for the ministry. In addition, local preschools come by for storytelling. This is a great way to bring in the fall season and to serve the local community as well.

Consignment Sale

Twice a year we have a consignment sale. This event is the biggest fundraiser for our ministry and it is a huge outreach opportunity to the community. Youth who work at the consignment sale can earn money towards their youth accounts which they can in turn use to offset the cost of trips. If you would like to participate in the consignment sale check back on our website in early Fall and early Spring when you will have an opportunity to signup!
