Local Missions/Outreach - The vision of the congregation here at GCUMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our youth ministry follows that vision through service opportunities and mission trips/events. On the local level, about every six weeks we have a "faith in action" night instead of the regular UMYF. On those nights, we do a local service project of some sort. In addition, we do some construction work with Housing Greensboro, a non-profit that renovates lower income homes. Also, in the summer, we are active with Partnership Village through Urban Ministries.
Regional Mission Trips - We go on two regional mission trips each year. During Spring break, we go to ReCreation which is a construction ministry based in Asheville, NC. This trip is primarily for our Junior High students but we also take Senior High students to serve as leaders as well. Every summer, we serve with Appalachian Service Project (ASP) for a week to work on lower income homes in the rural regions of Appalachia. Everyone who goes on these trips, consistently says that they are life-changing, transformative events. Through these trips, we are able to serve others by providing for their immediate needs and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build relationships with the family members who live in these homes. We always receive more from these families than we give.
Global Mission Trip - For our older youth, those who are rising seniors and recently graduated, we go to Arecibo, Puerto Rico every summer. This is not a construction based mission trip, it is totally a relational mission trip. We spend the week working with troubled youth who live in group homes and most of what we do is simply to hang out and show God's love to them through conversations and sharing our stories and listening to theirs.
