What is Stephen Ministry?

Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

Stephen Ministry offers a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties.

Who’s Involved in Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Leaders are church staff, lay leaders, and pastors trained to provide ongoing leadership for their congregation’s Stephen Ministry. They are equipped for this key role through the Bridge Leader’s Training Course offered by Stephen Ministries St. Louis.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by their Stephen Leaders to offer care to people who are hurting. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that person once a week for about an hour.

Care receivers are individuals in the congregation or community who are going through a crisis or life difficulty. Potential care receivers first meet with a pastor or Stephen Leader, who assesses their needs for care and matches them with a Stephen Minister. The caring relationship lasts for as long as the need persists.

We invite you to pray as GCUMC reignites our Stephen Ministry program.  We recently commissioned four Stephen Leaders and currently have four trainees getting ready to serve as Stephen Ministers.  Carol Randecker is one of our recent Stephen Ministers who was commissioned and she shares her story with us.  As you read her story, please, pray along with us that this much needed ministry grows back into serving our congregation.

Carol's Story

I was unsettled when I moved from San Antonio, TX to Greensboro, NC; I wondered if I would find a spiritual community with which I could connect? I found my new church family at GCUMC! I found a church that is very warm and welcoming, generates amazing outreach, and demonstrates a love for helping others; so, it is no surprise to hear that this fine community is now restarting the Stephen Ministry.

When I was asked to be on the Stephen Ministry‘s team, I was honored and it seem like a good place to do God’s work. Growing up with a mother who was always helping others, I saw and learned about caring for others. It was modeled every day.  It seems natural and easy for me to give a helping hand. But, I also seem to want to fix the problem! After participating in the Stephen Ministry training, I understand more clearly that it is not up to me to fix their problem. That is Not what Stephen Ministry is about, fixing problems! I’ve learned so much; I now know I’m a tool for God. God is the cure giver or fixer and I am a caregiver. God is caring for people through people, which is what Stephen Ministry is about. I can be there for the person, a supporter, available as a listener and a reminder of God’s hope and love. When my husband passed away, I was blessed with God’s loving family, friends and church who were there to help me through the tough journey. Times, when we lose a loved one, or when life becomes so confusing or meaningless and depression sets in, you don’t have to be alone. At times like these it is very important to have someone who cares. Your church Stephen Ministry team will be there with that support and love.
