Hurricane Helene Relief- How Can I Help?
Below are the ways Guilford College UMC is responding to the natural disaster in our state.
Any way you can be involved is greatly appreciated.
A special offering will be collected on Sunday October 6th during all worship services.
PRayer
If you aren't able to anything else, or if you can do everything else, always pray. If it seems overwhelming, here are some prayer needs to get you started.
* Pray for safety, stamina, provision for families who have lost their homes, belongings, livelihoods.
* For those involved in the rapid response teams-- for stamina, the ability to quickly discern situations and needs, for and endless supply of compassion.
* Pray for God's provision of resources. Prayers of gratitude for how so many are coming together help each other.
Here is a link to a prayer by Bishop Ken Carter.
Financial Giving
Financial giving is one of the most powerful ways to help our neighbors in Western NC. Every dollar donated through the methods below goes directly to efforts on the ground in the mountains, meeting the needs of each individual community.
To give through Guilford College UMC, be sure to select "disaster relief/floods" from the drop-down menu.
Give directly to the Western NC Conference of the UMC's Hurricane Helene response disaster ministry. These gifts go directly to local affected churches to allow them to continue life-sustaining ministry in the wake of the hurricane.
Give to UMCOR- The United Methodist Committee on Relief. UMCOR responds with critical needs relief to disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide and within the United States. To read more about the current UMCOR response in the wake of Hurricane Helene click here. UMCOR has set up a giving portal to specify dollars go directly to Hurricane Helene response, so you can be sure your financial gift stays where you intend.
Cleaning kits aka "FLood buckets"
Participate in filling a flood bucket, or work with a group within the church that is packing buckets. Detailed instruction sheets can be found in the Narthex. A PDF and video versions of these instructions can be accessed here.
Flood buckets are filled with necessary cleaning supplies to assist in cleaning out flooded homes-- especially helping to mitigate the growth of mold. Each bucket has a value of around $75.00.
Join a relief mission team
We have now begun sending teams in partnership with congregations in the Spruce Pine area of NC. If you are interested in serving on a mission team in the future, you can express your interest to Pastor Jeremy.
